THE STORY BEHIND THE SERIES

AUSTRALIA: A CONTINENTAL HISTORY is a ten-book series built to examine the history of Australia not as a collection of events, but as a structured process shaped over time.

From the earliest European encounters to the modern era, the series traces how authority established control, how expansion extended that control across the continent, and how resistance—both internal and external—revealed its limits. Each volume builds on the last, forming a continuous narrative that connects discovery, settlement, conflict, growth, and transformation into a single, coherent system.

The project began in 2020 during the lockdown period, when travel across London and England led to the grave sites of those who played central roles in the founding and exploration of Australia. Standing at those locations—far removed from the continent they helped shape—shifted the perspective entirely. What had been history on paper became something far more deliberate and interconnected.

Over the following five years, that perspective developed into a complete series covering the full arc of Australia’s development, from pre-1787 to 2025, alongside a companion volume examining the three defining forces of the nation: Authority, Expansion, and Resistance.

This is not a retelling of familiar stories. It is a reconstruction of how a continent was built.

THE COMPANION VOLUMES

Alongside the ten-book series sits a set of companion volumes designed to examine Australia beyond chronology—through structure, systems, and defining forces.

These works step outside the timeline to focus on how the continent was shaped, rather than simply what occurred.

The companion series includes:

Governors, Explorers & Bushrangers
The Structure of Australia
The Isolated Continent
The Invented Continent

Each volume approaches Australia from a different structural perspective, examining the relationships between governance, expansion, environment, and identity. Together, they provide a deeper framework that supports and connects the main series.

At present, the first companion volume—Governors, Explorers & Bushrangers—is available, with the remaining volumes to follow.
